Complete Blood Cell (CBC) test

A CBC is a blood test that looks at a patient’s white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in order to evaluate health across a variety of factors.

Reading a CBC result may be daunting at first, but it is an important skill for leukemia caregivers as it’s one of the most common ways to get insight into your patient’s condition. For instance, seeing changes in ANC can help spot or prevent infections; low platelets or hemoglobin may necessitate a transfusion. Most hospital and clinic visits will start with a CBC, and during inpatient stays CBCs will be frequent.
