Nurse Practitioner (NP)

A Nurse Practitioner has greater autonomy and responsibilities than a Registered Nurse (RN). NP’s can examine and diagnose patients, prescribe medications, and plan treatments – in about half of the US they can work completely independent of medical doctors, while in the remaining states they still require a doctor to approve certain decisions.

Depending on the hospital and location, you may have an NP shaping many of the day to day treatment choices for a patient. NPs have advanced degrees and training and can provide much of the medical expertise a doctor can, while also bringing experience as a nurse that doctors typically lack.
